6th  Paradise  Jazz  Festival

Δελτίο Τύπου

This year Paradise Jazz Festival is hosting 27 superbmusicians, from 6 different countries. There will be artists from Cyprus, Greece, Malta, Bulgaria, Armenia, and Holland to inspire you. Our aim is to re-invent our festival, by changing everything!  Stage, setup, music, the only target being to create a proper festival atmosphere, where more people can enjoy this experience.

Friday night is dedicated to what we call “Ethnic Jazz”, and for that we are very proud to present the first star of this year festival Theodosii Spassov. His music is a remarkable fusion of Bulgarian folk music and contemporary jazz. Theodosii is a master of the traditional Bulgarian end-blown flute, the kaval, which although most associated with the music of shepherds, is an invaluable tool in Bulgarian jazz. This successful experiment ends on a quiet note midst the city sounds, reminiscent of the calm beauty offered in the Bulgarian countryside. On stage as Spassov Quartet will be Michail Iosifov on trumpet, Rumen Toskov on piano & analogic bass keyboard, Hristo Yotzov on drums & percussions. Learn more at www.theodosiispassov.com .

The other
Fridays night appearance belongs to the first Cypriot join Andrea Georgiou Quintet which is promising us a musical journey in contemporary European jazz, with explicit Ethnic characteristics & impressionistic improvisation. The five artists will present compositions by Andrea Georgiou, who is one of the most important personalities in European jazz. The other members of the group are Danni Adamopoulou on vocals & the well known from their amazing last year’s performance with Evagora Karagiorgi  Irinaeos Trio & their remarkable transformations of Cypriot & Mediterranean music to jazz. George Krasides on saxophone & clarinet, Georgios Koulas on drums  & Irinaeos Koullouras on acoustic & electric bass.

On
Saturday 17th we are going to have the pleasure of hosting the first Maltese group to join to our festival. We hope that this will be only the beginning for the two island’s cultural communication. The international multi awarded composer & pianist Dominic Galea is driving the Trio group that complete Noel Grech on drums & Mario Cocker Aquilina on the bass to the sounds that travels from classic to modern jazz with notes that remind a bit to the music of Keith Jarrett. Special guest that we are very happy to book at the last minute is Walter Wella, on saxophones and flute, an extraordinary musician who plays also as member of the Maltese folk jazz fusion band, Etnika – and is also an internationally recognised sculptor in glass.

For the next quest who appears, we couldn’t get a better name. Over the years
Haig Yazdjian has collaborated with the most prominent Greek composer and singers as well as soloists of international stature. Among them, Nikos Xydakis, Eleftheria Arvanitaki, Savina Yannatou, Maria Farantouri, Dimitra Galani, Elli Paspala, David Lynch, Michalis Nikoloudis, Dave Spilain, Omar Farouk Tekbilek, Djivan Gasparyan, Theodossi Spasov and Glen Velez. Haig was born by Armenian parents in Syria, and has been living in Greece for the last 25 years. There, he discovered the enchanting elements of Eastern music, and took up the oud as the means to express an inner undiscovered domain. Soon, he became extremely popular as an oud soloist, and one of the most characteristic vocalists. He is very popular to all different ages & he is well known for his live performances. He is bringing from Greece the following musicians: Nikos Sidirokastritis on drums, Vaggelis Karipis percussions, Petros Varthakouris acoustic bass & Themis Nikoloudis violin.

Sunday’s first group to appear is the
Miraculous Mandarin Trio . The trio was formed in the summer of 2004 & they took part on last year Festivals jam session. The three members of the band after playing gigs with each other at various occasions, decided to get together and form a new band with an original sound. The music is focused on improvisation, communication on stage, and is based mainly around funk and drum 'n bass rhythms. A lot of the music is composed on the spot which is one of the trio's main characteristic. This time they will have two special friends with them, Michalis Maichael on trompet & Rodos Panagiotou on percussions. Other guests, who have appeared with the Miraculous Mandarin Trio, include Avishai Cohen (trumpet), Eric Durrer (percussion) and James Adams (trombone). The bands forthcoming plan is to start recording, and to perform in Europe. Marios Takoushis on keyboards, Lefteris Moumtzis on bass & George Koulas on drums are the three members of the group.

The last superb band that is going to perfume on the
6th PJFestival is the Van Merwijk, Corsen, Vierdag Trio & will be the first group that we ever host from Holland. This virtuoso Latin jazz super trio is put together by Dutch drummer Lucas Van Merwijk and has Randal Corsen from Curacao on piano and Jeroen Vierdag from the Netherlands on bass. Besides original compositions the trio plays music from Cuban pianist Emiliano Salvador and other Latin American, Antillean and Jazz standards which they transformed into their own unique and swinging style of playing. Visit Lucas production’s company web site address www.tamtamproductions.com to learn more about this fantastic artist.
And like we got used to the last years events, the program is going to end with the musician’s big festive party, the
Jam Session. The meeting of so many talented musicians from different places of the world on the music stage with jazz music in their minds is the moment that we all here at Paradise Place are waiting for. Special guest only for the jamming, one of the best percussionist in Europe Jens Kerkhoff .
